Apple Cider Vinegar
ACV also makes an amazing skin cleanser and toner. If you’re having a breakout or want to give your face a thorough, but gentle cleanse, dilute 1 tablespoon ACV with 2 tablespoons water. Dab on cottonball and apply to skin.
You will be shocked ( and a bit grosses out) at the gunk it removes from your skin and how quickly your breakout fades away. This of course works for all your skin head to toe and you can apply it to razor rash or ingrown hairs.
Additionally, I drink 1 to 2 tablespoons of ACV daily, diluted in water of course, and add it to as many recipes as possible for all of its health benefits such as healthy digestion, clear skin and reduced allergies. Hell I even put some in my dog’s water and bath him in it to help with his allergies, skin and digestion.
The key is to purchase ACV that is raw, unfiltered and with the mother. This is how you get all the amazing benefits. The clear filtered vinegar is only good for household cleaning and playing at home scientist with baking soda.
Green Tea on the Daily
I drink green tea daily and it’s been one of the best habits for healthy skin I’ve ever picked up. Hot or iced, as long as it’s freshly made, green tea is loaded with healthy antioxidants and detoxing agents that keep you looking and feeling great. Forget the bottled or pill form rubbish. Those are a waste of money and typically loaded with crud like tons of sugar, BPA plastic or caramel coloring.
Instead make your own with the age old practice of adding tea leaves to water. During these hot summer months you can make it outside good ol’ fashion sun tea style. Regardless of how you choose to make it, keep in mind green tea still has caffeine and thus keep your consumption within reason.
Exfoliating with coffee grounds is a total game changer. I had read several articles talking about making coffee ground exfoliating mixtures. I was intrigued by the idea and the potential it offered to firm up and moisturize skin, while reducing scaring and breakouts.
Getting to smell like coffee and look pretty sounded pretty amazing. Mixing coffee with oils and having to clean up afterwards sounded like an ordeal.
Then I stumbled across an Instagram post where a gal shared her secret for looking her best after getting little to no sleep. Granted I was worried she needs to get some sleep for her overall health, but I was pretty pumped on the idea.
She took straight up coffee grounds and rubbed them all over her wet face while in the shower. Leave them on your face for 2 to 3 minutes while you wash your hair and rinse them off. Boom! Instant fresh, awake face.
I tried it out head to toe and my skin felt and looked amazing! The oil from the coffee beans made my desert parched skin oh so happy. After only doing it one time I recognized significant improvement in my skin tone and reduction in some long standing scars. Is there anything coffee can’t do? Oh, right… help you get to sleep.
I must admit the first attempt left a cleanup situation that was pure hell. My shower may never recover from that, despite all the ACV and baking soda combos I try.
Learned that going with a finer grind on the beans made my skin even happier and clean up far easier. In coffee snob slang that means go for an espresso grind. If you have a home grinder that ranges from course to fine, hold the grind button down a real long time.
Carrots are hands down one of the simplest, cheapest, delicious and nutrient dense foods out there. They may seem like nothing special, but they are absolutely amazing when it comes to adding a beautifying nutrient pop to your foods.
The carotenoids (pre-vitamin A) in carrots are amazing for healing and nourishing epithelial cells. Those are the type of cells that line us inside and out. On the outside this is namely our skin and on the inside these cells line all of our organs to keep them safe from pathogens likes viruses, bacteria and fungi.
Eggs, Onion and Asparagus – Oh My!
When my skin breaks out, I “think stink.” Foods such as eggs, onions and asparagus all have a very distinct stink because of the sulfur compounds they contain. Sulfur acts as an antimicrobrial and clears up skin.
The protein and nutrients in the eggs help repair skin tissue, give your hair a nice shine, plus give you great fuel at the gym.
Whip up a healthy scramble with eggs, onion, garlic and asparagus and within a day you’ll notice your break out starting to clear out.
I have completely given up on buying eye makeup remover. I started using coconut oil last year in a pinch when I ran out of my former fave. I was shocked it worked so well and elated when I got up the next morning to see the skin around my eyes looked healthier than ever before! What?!
Willing to admit it may all be in my head, but in the year I have been using coconut oil to remove my eye makeup I have noticed my eyes look younger (read my starter wrinkles went away), my eye lashes are thicker and side bonus my eyes don’t get as dry. Logistics – it’s inevitable that I will get a little coconut oil in my eyes, but it seems to be helping keep dry eyes in the desert at bay (in addition to the omega-3s I get).
Downside, unless you get all the mascara and the majority of the coconut oil off, you will wake up with mascara all over your pillow case… or so I hear.
