Today, February 12th, is Abe Lincoln's birthday. In honor of one of America's greatest Presidents... and perhaps a reminder of great Presidency by a qualified, confident and admirable man, I unearthed an article I wrote for Fiterazzi Magazine in 2015. Fiterazzi was bought out shortly there after and this gem has been waiting to resurface. Here's to you Abe. Happy Birthday!
If you strive to find health and wellness, you will find it in all that you do, even the most unexpected places, like the famous words of President Abraham Lincoln. As Abe once said, “If you look for the bad in people expecting to find it, you surely will.” Flip the script to positivity and know you will always find what you seek. Live a healthy, well-nourished life by seeking the best for yourself like a boss; like a Presidential Boss. Here are eight inspiring mic drops by the great 16th President himself.

This gem works for many aspects in life, especially when hitting the gym or making food choices. If you’re going to invest the time and effort to go to the gym, do the best you can. If you’re choosing to eat healthier, be mindful of this idea at the grocery store and at restaurants. Another way to look at it is, if you’re going to be an example, be a good one. You never know who is looking up to you.

This is particularly important when it comes to yoga poses and squats. Proper form and good footing are crucial when it comes to exercise. You don’t want to invite injury and derail yourself. Rather than trying to hasten through your reps or class, take a moment to make sure that your footing, alignment and form are proper. Perhaps President Lincoln was the original American yogi.

Perhaps the greatest and most concise truth sprinkle of all time. All time! Happiness is a choice and an inside job, as are your health, wellness, nutrition and fitness. Make up your mind to be just so.

Procrastination is human, but taken to excess it can and will derail your gains. Just ask ol’ honest Abe himself. Oh wait. You can’t because he waited to create the Secret Service until a few hours before his assassination. Awkward. Also because he was born 208 years ago in 1809.
If you prep food today, you’ll be set to have a simple, well-nourished week ahead. If you make sure your gym bag is packed and ready to go, you’ll be less likely to hop back in bed at 5am when your gym clothes are all dirty. If you can get it done today, why not? Stress reduction and simplification are very good things.

You can have that body, career, life you want. All you have to do is work for it every single day. A nutritionist can tell clients the calories, nutrients and foods they need to reach their goals. It’s up to the individuals to choose to stick to the plan. Realize you’re not depriving yourself, but rather gaining the future you want. You want to bench press like a boss, create that future by putting in the work. If Abe asked you what future your current actions are creating, how would you answer? Given the audience, an honest answer would be best.

Many fall short of their weight, fitness or health goals because they pick grand, long-term goals that don’t yield instant, tangible results. You have the same 24 hours in a day as Beyoncé. Do the best you can each day with what you have. Creating a daily mini-goal will get you to your long term goal before you realize it. Gains don’t happen overnight, so don’t give up. Each day start a new, with the goal to do your best.

Remember this the next time you want to drop Lincolns on a calorie loaded coffee drink or on your way home driving past the cupcake shop. Sweet treats will always be there. Your success and gains will not. Save those for treats and opt for healthier choices instead. You are whatever it is you do repeatedly. President Lincoln himself is in the Wrestling Hall of Fame because he is said to have all but one of his approximately 300 matches. If you continually make choices that lend towards your success, you will be successful.

Again, Abe knows best. He really does. We all get off track or have bad days. The distance you find yourself from the track or how bad the day really is depends on your perspective. A bad workout is better than one that didn’t happen at all. Is it really bad if you choose to take lessons from it to make your next one even better? Find the lesson and the positive in all that you do and preserve. That’s what Lincoln would do. He was all about the perseverance and gains.
